The Abacos: Green Turtle Cay

Green Turtle Cay was one of the first islands settled in the Bahamas in the 1770’s by the Revolutionary Way Loyalists.   The Town of New Plymouth is a quaint, 18th century village set by the sea and offers a variety of things to do.  From restaurants, shopping, galleries and museums.    One thing I love about Green Turtle is that just about every grocery store offers a variety of homemade breads and desserts; they are my weakness and a must have when in the islands.  Be sure and visit “Ye Olde Jail” it’s very small, but would be a shame to miss it.  Then, take a tour of the Loyalist Memorial Statue Garden created in the memory of the founders of Green Turtle Cay, and move on to the Green Turtle Cemetery for some extraordinary photo opportunities.

We particularly like the Albert Lowe Museum, it displays the fascinating history of New Plymouth and boasts photographs, original oil paintings, antique artifacts and ship models of the Abaco sailing vessels, some of which were used during the Civil War as blockade runners.

If you are interested in a little night life, visit Sundowner’s Bar & Grill where you can shoot a game of pool and play dominoes with the locals.   Or, stop by Miss Emily’s Blue Bee Bar for her famous Goombay Smash Rum Punch.

Dear David & Jackie,

We are writing to thank you for such an amazing vacation.  This trip was so much more than just a vacation; it was an adventure we’ll never forget.  Who knew that the Bahamas had so much to offer, from the swimming pigs in Big Major to the Iguanas at Allen’s cay and everything in between?  Conch diving, learning how to clean and prepare conch salad and conch chowder; everyday offered a new experience.  Our personal favorite was catching the 200lb marlin while simply trolling.  Being that this wasn’t a fishing charter, it was a very welcomed bonus.  We want to thank you for your hospitality, for making us feel like family and the gift of a new friendship.   We would definitely recommend Fat Bottom Girl Charters to anyone considering this type of vacation.   Save a spot for us next year!
